Sunshine Coast Gasfitters
Gas on the Sunshine Coast is not quite like gas in the big cities. Much of the region runs on bottled LPG rather than mains, and where mains gas exists it varies almost street by street. Add salt air near the beaches and long supply runs out in the hinterland, and gas work here needs a fitter who knows the local reality. Because our licence covers plumbing and gas fitting together, our Sunshine Coast Plumbing team does the job and certifies it, rather than sending you a second trade to finish what the first one started.

What Legally Needs a Licensed Gas Fitter?
Gas work in Queensland is licensed work, and the line is not where most people assume. These are the jobs people often think they can do themselves, and cannot:
- Connecting any fixed appliance. A cooktop, oven, heater or hot water unit joined to the house supply is licensed work, even where it simply pushes onto an existing bayonet. The connection is the licensed part.
- Running, extending or moving a gas line. Any new pipework, extension or relocation. Lines must be sized for the total appliance load and pressure tested.
- A fixed point for a barbecue or outdoor kitchen. A quick-connect fitting on an external wall is a fixed gas connection and needs a licence. Swapping a bottle on a portable BBQ does not.
- Anything after a suspected leak. Once gas is isolated for an odour, the system must be traced, repaired and pressure tested before it goes back on.
Doing gas work yourself is illegal in Queensland, and uncertified work can void insurance and hold up a property sale. We issue the compliance certificate for every job as part of the work, not as an afterthought.

Our Gas Fitting Services
Our licensed gas fitters cover the full range, on both bottled LPG and mains gas:

Gas leak detection and repair
Traced, isolated, repaired and pressure tested before the gas goes back on. Suspected leaks jump ahead of routine work, any hour.

Cooktops, ovens and cookers
Connected to an existing point or a new point run for a renovation. We check your gas type first, since appliances suit one type only.

Gas heaters
Flued and unflued heaters installed, serviced and safety checked, with ventilation and clearances measured rather than assumed.

Gas hot water
Installation and repair of gas storage and continuous flow units, including electric-to-gas conversions.

New gas lines, points and BBQ connections
New runs from the meter or bottles to the appliance, extensions, relocations and fixed points for outdoor kitchens, each sized and pressure tested.

LPG bottle setups and changeovers
Cylinder placement to Australian Standards, regulators and automatic changeover valves.

Compliance and safety checks
Appliances and lines checked for leaks and certified, ideal before a sale or a new tenancy.

Commercial, food van and caravan gas
Gas work for cafes and businesses, mobile food vehicles and caravans or motorhomes, including compliance for resale.
LPG or Mains Gas?
Most Sunshine Coast homes run on bottled LPG, with mains natural gas available only in certain pockets and varying street by street. It matters because gas appliances are configured for one gas type or the other and cannot simply be swapped over without conversion, and because an LPG setup brings its own considerations: where the bottles can legally sit, the regulator, and an automatic changeover valve so you do not run dry. We confirm exactly what is connected at your address before quoting or ordering anything, so there are no surprises on the day.

Gas Work on the Coast: What’s Different Here
- Salt air near the beaches. From Kings Beach through to Coolum and Noosa, regulators, brass fittings and bottle connections corrode faster than they would inland, so they need checking sooner. A seized changeover valve is often the first sign.
- Bottle placement on smaller blocks. On tighter coastal lots and newer estates, where the bottles can legally sit, clear of windows, doors and ignition sources, often decides where a gas appliance can go at all.
- Long runs in the hinterland. Around Maleny, Montville and Conondale, gas usually means bottled LPG on long supply runs, so line sizing matters, a run that suited one appliance often will not carry a cooktop and a heater added later.
- Holiday lets and unflued heaters. Short-stay properties turn over guests unfamiliar with the appliances, so a safety check between seasons is cheap insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a gas fitter and a gas plumber?
In everyday use, none, and most people searching for one mean the other. Gas fitting is the licensed trade covering gas lines, appliance connection and certification. At Plumbing Bros our team is licensed for both plumbing and gas, so one team can handle a gas hot water fault or a kitchen renovation end to end.
Do I need a licensed gas fitter in Queensland?
Yes. Gas work in Queensland must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter, including connecting appliances, running or altering lines, and any work on the supply. DIY gas work is illegal, and uncertified work can affect insurance and hold up a sale.
Can I connect a gas cooktop myself?
No. Connecting a cooktop, oven or cooker to a fixed gas supply is licensed work, even onto an existing bayonet. Swapping a bottle on a portable BBQ is fine; anything fixed to the house needs a licensed gas fitter and a certificate.
Do you work on bottled LPG as well as mains gas?
Yes, both. Most Sunshine Coast properties run on bottled LPG, and mains gas varies by street. Appliances suit one gas type only, so we confirm what is connected before quoting.
What should I do if I can smell gas?
Turn the gas off at the meter or bottle, leave light switches and flames alone, open the area up, get everyone outside and call us from outside. Suspected leaks are treated as a priority, 24/7.
Do you provide a gas compliance certificate?
Yes. We issue the compliance certificate for the work we complete and hand it to you. Keep it for insurance, your managing agent, or a future sale.
