Sunshine Coast’s Leading Backflow Prevention Specialists
Backflow testing is compliance work, and the compliance is more specific than most property owners expect. It is not just about the test itself, which takes very little time, but about staying on top of the annual cycle and getting the right form to the right council inside the required window. Our endorsed licensed plumbers handle the whole loop so it comes off your desk entirely: locate the devices, test them, lodge the paperwork, and flag you before next year’s is due.

What Is Backflow, and Why It Matters
Backflow is water travelling the wrong way through your pipework, back toward the drinking water supply instead of away from it. It happens when mains pressure drops or reverses, for example during a water main break or heavy demand nearby. The danger is that whatever the water has been in contact with, garden chemicals, irrigation water, cooling systems or commercial processes, can be drawn back into the shared potable supply. A backflow prevention device is the one-way barrier that stops it, which is why councils require testable devices to be checked every year.

What Queensland Actually Requires
Backflow compliance on the Sunshine Coast has a specific shape, and it helps to understand it:

Only testable devices must be registered and tested
Testable devices such as reduced pressure zone devices (RPZD) and double check valve assemblies (DCVA) must be registered with your council and tested annually. Non-testable devices like dual check valves generally do not. If you are not sure which you have, that is worth establishing first, since paying to test something that never needed it is as common as missing one that did.

At least once every 12 months
Testable devices must be tested at least yearly by a licensed plumber holding the backflow prevention endorsement. The duty to keep the device maintained sits with the property owner, which is exactly why the annual reminder matters as much as the test.

Form 9 goes to the council and to you
The approved Form 9 records the test, and copies must reach the local government and the property owner within the required window after testing. Lodging it is the plumber's obligation, not yours.

Your council holds the register
Registration and monitoring sit with your local government, so a Sunshine Coast Council property is on that council's register and a Noosa Shire property on Noosa Council's. Unitywater supplies the water but does not hold the register.

Who Needs Backflow Testing?
Testable devices are common on properties where the water could come into contact with a contamination hazard, including:
- Commercial kitchens, cafes and restaurants
- Medical, dental and aged-care premises
- Workshops, factories and car washes
- Properties with irrigation systems or an alternative water supply
- Many multi-residential, strata and body corporate buildings
If you are unsure whether your property has a testable device, we can inspect it and tell you exactly what is there and what it requires, rather than you guessing from a rates notice.

How It Works
Locate and identify
We find every device on the property and confirm which are testable, since registers are often incomplete or out of date.
Test to standard
Each testable device is tested by an endorsed licensed plumber and the result recorded on the current approved form.
Lodged on time
Your Form 9 goes to the local government and to you inside the required window, keeping the register current.
Reminded next year
We flag your next due date before it lapses, and multi-site owners get the whole portfolio on one schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my property need a backflow device tested?
It depends on whether a testable device is installed, which depends on the hazard rating of what happens on site. Commercial kitchens, medical premises, workshops, car washes, irrigation and many multi-residential buildings commonly have them. We can inspect and confirm what your property requires.
How often does a backflow device need testing in Queensland?
Testable devices must be tested at least once every 12 months. The responsibility to keep the device maintained sits with the property owner, and your council administers the register of devices in its area.
Who is allowed to test a backflow device?
Testing must be done by a QBCC licensed plumber holding the backflow prevention endorsement, which is a separate qualification to a general plumbing licence. It is reasonable to ask any tester to confirm they hold a current one.
What happens to the test results?
The result is recorded on the approved Form 9, and copies must be provided to your local government and to you within the required window. Lodging it is the plumber’s obligation. Keep your copy, as insurers and buyers ask for it.
What happens if the device fails the test?
It needs to be repaired or replaced, because a failed device is not protecting the supply. Often the fix is a service kit and a retest in the same visit. If the device is at the end of its life, we will tell you plainly rather than rebuilding something that will fail again.
What happens if I do not have it tested?
Councils can take compliance action and apply penalties per device, and some will arrange rectification themselves and recover the cost. Your council is the authority on what applies, and it is a cheap thing to stay ahead of.
