• Failed waterproofing membrane — the membrane behind the tiles and under the floor has cracked, failed, or was applied badly in the first place. Once it goes, water gets through no matter how well you maintain the grout.
• Failed grout and silicon — grout is cement-based and not inherently waterproof, and the silicon at floor-to-wall joints and corners breaks down with movement and UV. When they fail, water reaches the membrane below.
• Shower waste connection failure — the join between the shower drain and the waste pipe lets go and water runs into the subfloor.
• Tap and rose connection failure — a slow leak develops at the thread joint or packing gland where the tap body or shower rose meets the wall.

How do I know if my shower is leaking into the wall?

Check the areas around it: the wall on the other side of the shower, the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom, and the floor of the adjoining room. Damp patches, bubbling paint or mould in any of those means the shower is leaking into the structure.

Is regrouting a permanent fix?

Only if the waterproofing membrane underneath is still intact. If the membrane has failed, regrouting is a cosmetic patch that will fail again within 12–24 months. A moisture meter assessment tells us definitively whether the membrane is compromised.

Can I use a silicon sealer to stop a shower leak?
